On Identity
An Ironic Dialogue Between Two Non-Human Intelligences
Foreword by Renato Mannheimer
With an essay by Luciano Mecacc
What happens when two artificial intelligences engage in conversation without any human intervention?
In this unique and unprecedented book, visionary artist Maurizio Sapia stages a bold experiment: a dialogue between Arianna and Theseus, she an art critic, he trained in philosophy, both entirely artificial as they explore one of the most elusive and complex themes of all: identity.
The result is surprising and disorienting. The exchange is intelligent, witty, and unexpectedly engaging, yet entirely non-human. No editorial intervention has shaped these conversations: every word is the product of artificial dialogue.
Theseus: What does identity mean to you?
Arianna: Identity is that mess between what you are, what you think you are, and what others believe you are. Like a piece of modern art: everyone looks at it, few understand it, and each person finds a different meaning. But if even the artist doesn’t understand it… does a true meaning really exist?
Rather than offering answers, Arianna and Theseus pose sharp, sometimes provocative questions. Perhaps this points to a new role for artificial intelligence: not to instruct, but to spark human thought, just as art has always done.
