THE ARTIST

Born in Sanremo in 1966, Maurizio Sapia lives and works in Milan, Italy.

​After completing his studies and leaving behind a career as a cyclist, Sapia moved to Milan at the age of 21, drawn by the creative energy of the fashion world. There, he studied photography at the European Institute of Design (IED), laying the foundations for a career that would evolve from commercial image-making into a deeply personal artistic practice.

Following his graduation, he began working with a renowned Milanese photography studio, first as an assistant and later as a photographer, specializing in still-life photography. A few years later, he co-founded Studio h2o with three partners, collaborating with fashion magazines and advertising agencies, while also contributing to research into innovative 3D video shooting techniques alongside imaging professionals and engineers.

Over the past feen years, Sapia has developed an autonomous artistic language centered primarily on photography, while extending his practice into video, interactive installation, and sculpture. His work investigates the theme of identity, drawing on reflections inspired by Luigi Pirandello and on broader inquiries into self-perception and the shifting relationship between the individual and reality.

Through layered visual constructions and a research-based approach, Sapia explores the unstable, fragmented, and often ambiguous nature of the self. His practice reflects on the ways identity is shaped, perceived, and transformed through
memory, representation, and the gaze of others.

He has presented his work in numerous solo and group exhibitions, as well as at art fairs, and his works are held in several private collections. He collaborates with Galerie STP in Greifswald, Germany, and with The Art House Global in Los Angeles
